Canada hails Bangladesh's policy to check 'early marriage'

Canadian Minister of International Development Karina Gould has highly appreciated Bangladesh government's policy and steps to prevent "early marriage" in the country.
The Canadian minister's appreciation came during a meeting with Bangladesh State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki in New York on Monday, according to a message received here today.
Chumki is now in New York to join the 60th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 60).
During the meeting, the state minister highlighted the (Bangladesh)
government's achievements in women empowerment and gender equality.
She also apprised the Canadian minister of the steps Bangladesh government has so far taken to check "early marriage".
Meanwhile, a side even was arranged in the afternoon under the joint initiatives of Bangladesh and Canada, where the state minister also elaborated the Bangladesh government's measures to prevent early marriage.
Canadian Minister Karina Gould, UNICEF Director Ted Chiban and Joly Noor of Plan International, Bangladesh also spoke at the event.
At the function, a power point presentation "Initiative to end child
marriage in Bangladesh" was made.
On behalf of the Bangladesh government, the state minister will deliver her address in the 60th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 60) tomorrow.
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
