BCIM-EC to help change socio-economic scenario in Asian region: Shahriar

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam today hoped that BCIM-EC, the One Belt-One Road initiative and others regional connectivity initiatives would help change socio-economic scenario in the Asian region.
"We strongly believe that Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCIM-EC), the One Belt-One Road initiative and other measures of regional connectivity initiative will positively change socio-economic scenario of not only our two peoples but of all the peoples of this region," he said.
The state minister expressed the hope while taking part at a seminar organized by Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) at its auditorium on "Bangladesh China Relations: 40 Years of Partnership" as the chief guest.
Referring to Sino-Bangladesh relations, he said Dhaka-Beijing relationship is founded in the communion of civilizations that the two countries shared in this part of the world. "A new dimension in our long relations of friendship emerged when China and the newly independent Bangladesh established diplomatic relations in 1975", he added.
Shariar Alam said the relations between Bangladesh and China are based on the principles of sovereign equality, peaceful co-existence, mutual trust and respect for each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.
Mentioning Chinese support to Bangladesh's development, he said China's unwavering commitment to the country's socio-economic development has time and again been substantiated by her continued efforts to assist Bangladesh in fulfilling the legitimate wishes and desires of her people.
He reaffirmed further intensify the existing "Closer Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation" between Bangladesh and China for the benefit of the two nations.
"On our part, Bangladesh has consistently supported China on the issues of her core national interests as Bangladesh strongly adheres to the "One China Policy" and considers Taiwan and Tibet as integral parts of People's Republic of China," the state minister said.
About "Vision 2021" of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that pledges to transform the country into a middle-income one by 2021, he said Bangladesh has already elevated itself into a lower-middle income country and policies are en-route to take its GDP growth rate to 8 percent.
Chairman of Board of Governors of BISS Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Director General of BIISS Major General AKM Abdur Rahman, Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Ma Mingqiang and former Ambassador Faruque Sobhan, among others, took part in the discussion.
