Death-row war crimes convict Mohammad Kamaruzzaman’s lawyers said they would meet him to decide whether a presidential clemency would be filed.
“There has always been a provision for mercy petition. But it’s yet to be decided whether Kamaruzzaman will go for it. We cannot say anything without consulting him,” defence counsel Shishir Monir told reporters.
A four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha has rejected the Jamaat-e-Islami leader’s petition to review his sentence on Monday.
“We will seek permission from the prison authorities today. The next steps will be taken after consulting him,” said Monir.
Replying a query on whether a mercy petition was the next step, he replied: “Yes, we had asked him once earlier whether he would go for presidential clemency. He had told us then that he would decide on it only after the review petition was resolved.
“Since we are taking steps to meet him today, we hope to arrive at a decision after meeting him.”
Monir added that they would like to meet Kamaruzzaman on Monday, but if the prison authorities so decide the meeting could also take place on Tuesday.
On May 9, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal awarded the death sentence to the Jamaat Assistant Secretary General after finding him guilty of five charges out of the seven levelled against him.
