The entire country is facing a troublesome situation as countrywide blockade is going on.
Finance Minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhith has admitted that while Dhaka's condition is good, the rest of the country is in a bad shape. Hartal may not be effective in Dhaka, but road communications in the districts, as well as inter-district transport, is not normal. Inspector general of police Shahidul Huq, however, does not think that the situation outside Dhaka is all that bad. He feels that the situation is quite normal, other than a few scattered acts of sabotage here and there. If that was so, then why did he advise passenger buses not to ply the highways after nine at night? The bus owners want their buses on the roads. They want to observe developments for a few more days before they take any decision.
The fact is that, though shops and offices may be open in Dhaka, along with traffic on the streets, there is always the fear of petrol bomb attacks. The fear is greater outside Dhaka where the law and order forces are less in control. Every day innocent people are being burnt to death by petrol bombs hurled at passenger buses in the districts. Even in Dhaka, buses are being tourched often.
This situation cannot be allowed to continue in this manner for long. The government is simply relying on the police and the administration to run the districts outside Dhaka.
Additional RAB, BGB and police personnel are being deployed. The finance minister openly spoke of the additional fund allocation involved. The people are having to pay the price, and so will the government.
The government and political parties must find out a political
way to solve the problem. Both the government and BNP
should remember that the people want peace.
