- AL's one sided game
The ruling party AL celebrating their victory on 5th January election as the Day of Victory for Vemocracy. On the other hand, according to BNP 5th January is the Democracy Killing Day.It seems that this is a political game of the two main parties, but unfortunately, it has now been a one-sided game since January 2014, with the administration weighing in heavily on the side of the ruling coalition, the law enforcing agency in particular. While Gazipur was only the sample of what was to come, the happening since January 4 will do anything but help strengthen democracy or the rule of law in the country. As for now the country has to brace for an indefinite countrywide blockade called by Khaleda Zia.
Dwellers in Dhaka city, especially office goers, have been experiencing immense suffering since Monday morning for lack of vehicles on the road. At times, they are even made to pay twice the actual fare for going to places.
Though Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina claimed Khaleda Zia had not been held in confinement, law enforcers didn't allow the BNP chief to leave her political office in Gulshan office yesterday.
AL tried to save by putting the main BNP office in Paltan under lock, it having been sanitised of all the party workers who happened to be there in the early hours of January 4. Democracy has been saved also by declaring Sec 144 in certain parts of the city and by prohibiting meetings, rallies and assembly of any kind till further orders, not only in Dhaka city but also in many parts of the country.
AL leaders are actually worried about the BNP and its capability of managing large turnout, as was seen in many parts of the country where the BNP was allowed to hold meetings. The excuse that the administration wants us to digest about the likelihood of violence in a BNP meeting has become too hackneyed.
Also the chief of ruling Awami League, Hasina was speaking at a meeting with Chhatra League leaders at the Gono Bhaban marking the pro-AL student body's founding anniversary on Sunday.
And last but not the least, democracy has been saved by not allowing the BNP to hold meeting in any of the several alternative locations it had suggested to the DMP.
BNP had announced the rally on the first anniversary of January 5 parliamentary polls that she and her allies boycotted.
On Saturday, Khaleda went to the office around 8:30pm. Law enforcers barred her when she attempted to leave the office around 11:30pm.
Then began deployment of additional forces there. A few police trucks, a water-cannon were placed on the road in front of the office that night.
The security forces also restricted the entrance of the party leaders and activists in the office.
At least 11 trucks, some laden with sand and bricks, were parked on the road of the office. The truckers said they were forced by law enforcers to gather there.
Citing an application Khaleda submitted to Chawkbazar Police Station, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said police will provide "security" to the BNP Chairperson as long as “she needs it”.
Through a lawyer, Khaleda on December 31 submitted the application seeking security following the attack by Chhatra League and Jubo League on BNP men on December 24 when Khaleda went to a court in Bakshibazar in connection with two corruption cases.
If these two leaders agreed with each other, a year ago democracy was saved. There should be no hesitation to say that AL and BNP are simultaneously responsible for killing the democracy.we wish the game will be over very soon and the people of Bangladesh will get relief from the intolerable situation.
