- Bid farewell to ‘Bhasha Matin’
People has gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar to bid farewell to Abdul Matin, also known as ‘Bhasha Matin’ for his pivotal role in the Language Movement.
Earlier, his coffin was taken to the historic spot at Amtola, where police, on Feb 21, 1951 had showered bullets on activists in a rally demanding Bangla as a national language of then Pakistan.
Mourners, walking on foot, escorted the flower-adorned hearse to the national monument dedicated to Language Martyrs, where politicians, cultural activists and ordinary citizens were seen waiting for its arrival.
The 88-year-old died at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday morning.
He came to be known as ‘Bhasha Matin’ (language warrior Matin) for his role as the convenor of all-party state language movement committee.
He played an active role in forming the Chhatra Union after the Language Movement and became its president. He then got involved in the communist movement.
As per his wish, his eyes would be donated to voluntary organisation Sandhani and the body for medical students.
