BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will hold a meeting with the party’s senior leaders to discuss whether BNP will take part or not in upcoming municipality polls under the party symbol.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at the party chief’s Gulshan office around 8:00pm with Khaleda in the chair, said BNP sources.
This will be Khaleda’s the first formal meeting with her party’s senior leaders since she returned home on November 21 after two months of her stay in London.
Earlier yesterday, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the election schedule for 234 municipalities which will be held on December 30 this year.
The last date of submitting nomination papers is December 3, and the nominations will be scrutinised on December 5-6, the CEC informed adding that the last date for withdrawing nomination is December 13.
As per the new municipality act, the candidates nominated by different political parties registered with the Election Commission or independent aspirants will be able to contest the polls for the mayoral posts in the municipalities.
However, elections to the remaining councillor posts, including the reserve seats for women, of the municipalities will be held in non-partisan manner under the existing system.
