Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith today said tax return submission is needed to establish citizen rights, but unfortunately people don't want to submit it.
"Only 16-17 lakh people submit tax return although the total number of population in the country is nearly 16 crore. So, the number of tax payer should be around 1.60 crore," he added.
The minister said this while inaugurating "Tax Information and Service Centre" in the Secretariat to provide necessary information and assistance to the government officials to submit income tax return for fiscal 2015-16.
Muhith said there are some complexities in income tax law that makes the people unpleasant for submitting income tax return and called for making the system simple.
Speaking on the occasion, State Minister for Finance and Planning M A Mannan said through teaming up with other organizations NBR is working to boost the government's revenue.
Income tax fair, he said, is encouraging the people in submitting income tax.
Cabinet Division Secretary M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan and NBR Chairman Nojibur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.
The Tax Information and Service Centre has been set up at the IRD conference room in the secretariat. The centre will remain open from September 10 between 9am and 4pm.
