Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the navy is being modernised so that it can contribute to global peace anywhere in the world.
“All of us hope that our navy will play crucial role, not only in Bangladesh, but also anywhere in the international arena to establish global peace,” she said on Sunday.
She added the Navy would have to become an ‘efficient’, ‘skilled’, ‘balanced’, and ‘tri-dimensional’ force to achieve that. “With that in mind, we have already finalised the process to add two submarines, which would join the fleet by mid 2016.”
Hasina was speaking at the commissioning of the BNS KJ Ali, BNS Sandip and BNS Hatia at the naval berth in Mongla.
Two Landing Craft Tanks (LCT) were also inducted into the navy feet during the ceremony.
All the vessels were made in Bangladesh. Khulna Shipyard built the ships, while the Narayanganj Dockyard built the LCTs. She hoped Bangladesh would be able to build more technologically advanced vessels in future.
She added that another US-build frigate and two ‘state-of-the-art’ corvettes made in China will be commissioned by the navy later this year.
The setting up of coastal surveillance stations and other related infrastructure was also being evaluated.
“Considering our limited resources, we have to keep in mind that everyone will have to contribute to keep up-to-date a technology-based, expensive force like the navy.”
The prime minister went on to laud the navy for battling ‘calamities’ to safeguard Bangladesh’s 720-kilometre coastal belt, which provides sustenance to nearly 30 million people and the sea routes through which 90 percent of the country’s products are traded.
