Police have arrested a key accused in the murder of Chittagong University student Taposh Sarkar, who was killed in a Chhatra League factional clash in December last year.
Golam Azmir Arif, a fourth year student of economics and one of the 27 accused in the case, was arrested in Patenga in the port city early yesterday.
A team from Patenga police station first tracked him down and then handed him over to Hathazari police where the murder case had been filed.
Taposh, a freshman of the Sanskrit department at CU, was himself an activist of the ruling party’s student body.
On December 14 last year, he was shot dead at Shah Amanat dormitory of the university in an infighting over establishing supremacy on the campus.
Two days later, Taposh’s friend Hafizul Islam filed the murder case accusing 30 named Chhatra League leaders and around 10-15 unnamed people.
Prime accused Ashrafuzzaman Asha, a central leader of the CU unit Chhatra League, is still at large. According to the case statement, Taposh died of a bullet fired from Asha’s gun.
Injured Pijush Kanti Barman received first aid at the university medical centre, police said.
