Dhaka is going to be the sixth largest mega city in 2030 adding at least 10 million more people, an ICDDR,B population scientist says.
Peter Kim Streatfield on Tuesday said environmental factors were also contributing in pushing more people to the capital.
A Professor Emeritus of ICDDR,B’s Centre for Population Urbanisation and Climate Change, Streatfield was briefing journalists on climate change, consequences of urbanisation and migration.
The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh organised the training jointly with Bangladesh Health Reporters’ Forum.
The UN defines a mega city where 10 million or more people live.
Streatfield said when Bangladesh was formed in 1971 there were only three mega cities in the world – New York, Tokyo and Osaka.
Now there are 28 mega cities, he said and by 2030 the number will be 41.
He said Dhaka was now the 11th largest with 17 million people and “will be sixth largest in 2030 with 27 million”.
“Bangladesh’s urban population increased ten fold, and Dhaka City increased 10 fold since independence,” he said analysing recent researches.
The population scientist said Dhaka took until 2002 to reach 10 million, “but it will add another 10 million over the next 15 years”.
Recently released Bangladesh Urban Health Survey found environmental reasons account for about seven percent of all migration to city slums.
Prof Streatfield said Dhaka slums accounted for 20 percent population from southern Barisal, despite the fact that the division comprised only 6 percent of Bangladesh’s total population.
ICDDR,B Executive Director Prof John Clemens, Director for Children and Adolescent Health Dr Shams E Arifeen, and Director for Food Security and Nutrition Dr Tahmeed Ahmed also spoke at the training, among others, on health issues.
