১৯৭১ এর উত্তাল ৩ মার্চ

৩ মার্চ ঢাকায় জাতীয় পরিষদের অধিবেশনের তারিখ নির্ধারিত হয়, কিন্তু ভেতরে ভেতরে পাকিস্তানের প্রেসিডেন্ট ইয়াহিয়া খান পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানের নেতা জুলফিকার আলী ভুট্টো এবং সামরিক বাহিনীর অফিসারদের নিয়ে ষড়যন্ত্রের নীলনকশা বোনা শুরু করে। ১৯৭১ সালের ১ মার্চ কোন কারণ ছাড়াই ৩ তারিখের নির্ধারিত অধিবেশন বাতিল করা হয়। ক্ষুব্ধ পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের মানুষের ধৈর্যের শেষ সীমা ছাড়িয়ে গেল এই সিদ্ধান্ত।
সারা দেশে বিক্ষোভের বিস্ফোরণ হয়। ঢাকা পরিণত হয় মিছিলের নগরীতে। বঙ্গবন্ধু সারা দেশে ৫ দিনের হরতাল এবং অসহযোগ আন্দোলনের ডাক দেন। তার আহবানে সারা পূর্ব পাকিস্তান কার্যত অচল হয়ে যায়। সামরিক সরকার কারফিউ জারি করে পরিস্থিতি নিয়ন্ত্রণের চেষ্টা করে কিন্তু বুলেটের ভয় দেখিয়ে বাঙ্গালিদের রাজপথ থেকে সরানো যায় না।
৩ মার্চ বঙ্গবন্ধু আহুত হরতাল এবং অসহযোগ আন্দোলন করতে গিয়ে ঢাকাসহ সারাদেশে গুলিতে বেশ কয়েকজনের মৃত্যু হয়। মৌচাক মোড়ের ঠিক উল্টোদিকেই একটা স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ রয়েছে। শহীদ ফারুক-তসলিম স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ। শহীদ ফারুক ইকবাল তাদের একজন। আবুজরগিফারী কলেজের এই ছাত্রলীগ নেতা (তখন এজিএস) বিক্ষোভ মিছিলে নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার সময় গুলিতে শহীদ হন।
এনিয়ে ডাঃ শিমুল কলি হোসেইনের স্মৃতিচারণটা হুবহু নিচে দেওয়া হল-
“এই লিখাটা লিখছি সম্পূর্ণ স্মৃতি হাতড়ে। ১৯৭১ সালের মার্চ মাসে আমি ছিলাম শিশু। তাই কিছু ভুল-ভ্রান্তি থাকলেও পুরো ঘটনাটা আমার মনে আজও গেঁথে আছে। তখন আমরা থাকতাম পূর্ব মালিবাগে। আমার বাবার তিন ভাই ছিলেন। তার মধ্যে দু’জন ইতিমধ্যে গত হয়েছেন। মেঝ ভাইয়েরও বয়স হয়েছে। তিনি ছিলেন নিঃসন্তান। তিনি আর আমার চাচী পূর্ব মালিবাগে পাঁচকাঠা জমির উপর ছোট্ট একটা টিনের ঘর বানিয়ে থাকতেন। তাঁদের অনুরোধে ঝিকাতলার বিশাল বাড়ি ছেড়ে আব্বা আমাদের নিয়ে এসে উঠলেন চাচার বাড়ির প্রায় পাশেই। এই বাড়িতে কোন বাগান নেই, কোন ছাদ ও নেই। ইংরেজী এল আকারের টিনের একতলা বাড়ি আর সামনে ছোট্ট পাকা একটা উঠাণ। ঘরগুলির দেয়াল আর সীমানা প্রাচীর ইটের বলে রক্ষে! আমাদের বাড়ির লাইনে প্রায় দশ বারোটা বাড়ি, সামনে একটা রাস্তা তাতে কদাচিৎ দু’ একটা রিকশা চলত। পাড়ার ছেলে-মেয়েদের খেলার জায়গাটা ছিল ঐ রাস্তা। রাস্তার অপর পারে কিছু খালি প্লট ছিল আর তার ওপাশে ছিল মৌচাক-রামপুরা সড়ক যেটাকে ডি আই টি রোড বলা হতো। বেশ কিছু খেলার সাথী জুটে যাওয়ায় বাগান-ছাদের শোক কাটিয়ে উঠেছি। ভর্তি করিয়ে দিল সিদ্ধেশ্বরী স্কুলে।
এখনকার মত তখন পড়াশোনা এত কঠিন ছিল না। স্কুল থেকে এসেই গোসল করে খেয়ে বিকেল না হতেই সেই রাস্তায়। ডাংগুলি, সাতচাড়া, বরফপানি, মোরগ-লড়াই, বউচি চলত মাগরিবের আযানের আগ পর্যন্ত। মার্চের ২ তারিখে স্কুল ছুটি হয়ে গেলো। আর পায় কে! ৩ তারিখে আব্বা অফিসের জন্য বের হতেই ছুটে রাস্তায় চলে গেলাম। আন্দোলনের কারনে সবারই স্কুল ছুটি তাই সবাই সকাল সকাল আমার মত এসে জুটেছে। বেশ কিছুদিন থেকেই শহরে মিছিল হচ্ছে। মিছিল হলেই মিছিলের পিছে পিছে ছুটতাম। খুব সম্ভবত দুপুর ১২টা বা ১টা হবে, “বীর বাঙ্গালী অস্ত্র ধরো, বাংলাদেশ স্বাধীন করো”, “তোমার আমার ঠিকানা, পদ্মা-মেঘনা-যমুনা” ইত্যাদি শ্লোগানের শব্দ ক্রমশঃই কাছে আসতে লাগলো। মাঠ পেরিয়ে ডি আই টি রোডের দিকে চেয়ে দেখি বিশাল এক মিছিল মৌচাক থেকে মালিবাগ রেলক্রসিং এর দিকে যাচ্ছে। আর পায় কে! ভৌ দৌড়- পিছনে তাকিয়ে দেখি বেনু, মুকুল আরো ক’জনাও দৌড়াচ্ছে। মূহূর্ত্যের মধ্যেই আমরা মিছিলটিকে ধরে ফেল্লাম। আজকের মিছিলটি মনে হয় সবচেয়ে বড়। বড়দের সাথে গলা মিলিয়ে আমরাও শ্লোগান দিতে লাগলাম। রেলক্রসিং এর কাছাকাছি এসে মিছিলটি থেমে গেল। সবাই এত জোরে হাটছিল যে হঠাৎ থেমে যাওয়াতে হোক বা ধাক্কাধাক্কিতেই হোক পিছন থেকে ক’জন রাস্তায় পরে গেল। তখনো সবাই দাঁড়িয়ে দাঁড়িয়েই শ্লোগান দিচ্ছে। শুরু হল হই-চই। কেউ কেউ বলছে সামনে পুলিশ, আর যেতে দিবে না।
হঠাৎ মনে হল দুপুরের খাবার সময় হয়ে এসেছে, মা তো খুঁজবে। অগত্যা অনিচ্ছা সত্বেও ফিরে এলাম। বাসায় এসে গোসল করে মাত্র খেতে বসেছি এমন সময় ভাইয়া কোত্থেকে দৌড়ে এল-হাঁপাতে হাঁপাতে বল্ল, “মিছিলে গুলি করেছে, ফারুক ইকবাল মারা গেছে”। আম্মা আতঁকে উঠলেন- সম্পর্কে আম্মা ফারুক ইকবালের মায়ের চাচী। আম্মাকে কিছু জিজ্ঞেস করার সুযোগ না দিয়েই ভাইয়া যেদিক থেকে আসছিলেন সে দিকে দৌড় দিলেন। আমিও তার পিছু নিলাম। যেতে যেতে শুনলাম তাঁর লাশ আমবাগানে নিয়ে আসবে। আমাদের মত অনেকেই ও দিকে ছুটছে। আমবাগানে পৌঁছে দেখি অনেক মানুষ। সবার মুখে মুখে নানা ধরনের গুজব। কেউ বলছে “লাশ পুলিশে নিয়ে গেছে”, কেউ বলছে “না না পল্টনে নিয়ে গেছে” ইত্যাদি। আমরা বেশ কিছুক্ষণ অপেক্ষা করে বাসায় চলে এলাম।
বিকালের দিকে খবর পেলাম লাশ নিয়ে এসেছে। গিয়ে দেখি শুধু মানুষ আর মানুষ। গোসল করানো নিয়ে মতানৈক্য দেখা দিল। এক দল বলছে ফারুক শহীদ হয়েছে তাই তাঁকে গোসল দিতে হবে না। অন্যরা বলছে নবী করিম(সাঃ) এর সময় যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে পানি ছিল না তাই পরনের কাপড় সহ গোসল ছাড়াই দাফন করা হতো, কিন্তু এক্ষেত্রে তো ওসব সমস্যা নাই। অবশেষে কাপড় দিয়ে ঘিরে তাঁকে গোসল দেয়া হলো। আমি মায়া ভাইকে (মোফাজ্জল হোসেন চৌধুরী মায়া, বীরবিক্রম) চিনতাম। খুব সম্ভবতঃ মায়া ভাই বাংলাদেশের বিশাল নতুন পতাকা দিয়ে মুড়ে দিলেন ওর লাশ। সবাই তখন কাঁদছে। যতদূর মনে পড়ে তখন সন্ধ্যা হয়ে আসছিল। এত লোক হয়েছিল জানাযায় যে একটু দাড়াঁনোরও জায়গা ছিল না। বাসায় ফিরে এসে শুনেছিলাম তাঁকে মৌচাক মার্কেটের কাছে সমাহিত করা হয়েছে। এ ঘটনার বেশ কিছুদিন পর আম্মা আমাকে নিয়ে ফারুক ইকবালের মায়ের সাথে দেখা করতে যান। আমার মনে আছে ফালু আপা ফারুক ইকবালের রক্তমাখা (রক্তের দাগ শুকিয়ে প্রায় খয়েরী হয়ে গিয়েছিল) শার্ট-প্যান্ট বুকে জড়িয়ে ধরে কাঁদছিলেন।
পুনঃশ্চ- ২৭ মার্চ কার্ফূ ভাঙ্গার পর মালিবাগ থেকে পালিয়ে (সে কাহিনী আর এক দিন বলবো) গ্রামের বাড়ি আসি। এরপর আর কখনো মালিবাগের ঐ বাড়িতে গিয়েছি বা ফালু আপার সাথে দেখা করেছি কি না মনে পড়ে না। এরপর বহু বছর কেটে গেছে। আব্বা মারা যান ১৯৯৫ সালের ২৯ শে অক্টোবর দুপুরবেলা। সেই রাতে হঠাৎই ফালু আপা ফোন করেন। জানতে চান তাঁর চাচা কেমন আছেন, চাচার কথা খুব মনে পড়ছে ইত্যাদি। যখন শুনলেন আজই আব্বা ইন্তেকাল করেছেন তখন চুপ করে গেলেন। আমি ও খুব অবাক হলাম এই ভেবে যে কি ভাবে আজকের দিনেই ওনার আব্বার কথা মনে এল! কি রহস্যময় এই জগত ’’
৩ মার্চ ১৯৭১ বাংলাদেশে জাতীয় শোক দিবস পালন করা হয়। দিনের হাইলাইট ছিলো পল্টন ময়দানে ছাত্রলীগ ও শ্রমিক লীগের যৌথ আয়োজনে আয়োজিত এক সমাবেশ অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।
ছাত্রলীগ আয়োজিত এই জনসভার প্রস্তাবাবলী
১. এইসভা পাকিস্তানী উপনিবেশবাদ শক্তির লেলিয়ে দেওয়া সশস্ত্র সেনাবাহিনী কর্তৃক বাঙালিদের উপর গুলিবর্ষণের ফলে নিহত বাঙালি ভাইদের বিদেহী আত্মার মাগফেরাত কামনা করিতেছে এবং শোকসন্তপ্ত পরিবার পরিজনের প্রতি সমবেদনা জ্ঞাপন করিতেছে এবং পাকিস্তানী উপনিবেশবাদ শক্তির সেনাবাহিনীর জঘন্য হত্যাকাণ্ডের প্রতিবাদে প্রতিরোধ আন্দোলন গড়িয়া তোলার জন্য আহ্বান জানাইতেছে।
২. এই সভা ভাড়াটিয়া সেনাবাহিনীর গুলিতে আহত স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে অংশগ্রহনকারী বীর বাঙালি ভাইদের বাঁচাইয়া রাখার জন্য স্বাস্থ্যবান বাঙালি ভাইদেরকে ব্লাডব্যাঙ্কে রক্ত প্রদানের আহ্বান জানাইতেছে।
৩. এই সভা পাকিস্তানী উপনিবেশবাদের কবল হইতে মুক্ত হইয়া স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশ প্রতিষ্ঠা, শোষণহীন সমাজ ব্যবস্থা কায়েমের জন্য সমাজতান্ত্রিক অর্থনীতি ও নির্ভেজাল গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠা করিয়া স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশে কৃষক-শ্রমিক রাজ কায়েমের শপথ গ্রহন করিতেছে।
৪. এই সভা স্বাধীন বাংলার জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবের নেতৃত্বে পূর্ণ আস্থা রাখিয়া তাঁহার সফল সংগ্রাম চালাইয়া যাওয়ার জন্য সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণ করিতেছে।
৫. এই সভা দলমত নির্বেশেষে বাংলার প্রতিটি নরনারীকে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবের নেতৃত্বে বাংলার স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রাম চালাইয়া যাওয়ার আহ্বান জানাইতেছে।
জয় বাংলা
এই জনসভায় স্বাধীনতার ইশতেহার পাঠ করা হয়। তৎকালীন ছাত্রলীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক শাহজাহান সিরাজ পঠিত এই ইশতেহার ছিলো এক অর্থে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের রূপরেখাই।

(স্বাধীন সার্বভৌম বাংলাদেশের ঘোষণা ও কর্মসূচী)
স্বাধীন ও সার্বভৌম বাংলাদেশ ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে-
গত তেইশ বছরের শোষণ, কুশাসন ও নির্যাতন এ'কথা স্পষ্টভাবে প্রমাণিত করেছে যে, সাত কোটি বাঙালিকে গোলামে পরিণত করার জন্য বিদেশী পশ্চিমা উপনিবেশবাদীদের যে ঘৃণ্য ষড়যন্ত্র তা থেকে বাঙালির মুক্তির একমাত্র পথ স্বাধীন জাতি হিসেবে স্বাধীন দেশের মুক্ত নাগরিক হয়ে বেঁচে থাকা। গত নির্বাচনের গণরায়কে বানচাল করে শেষবারের মতো বিদেশী পশ্চিমা শোষকেরা সে কথার প্রয়োজনীয়তা হাড়ে হাড়ে প্রমাণ করেছে।
৫৪ হাজার ৫ শত ৬ বর্গমাইল বিস্তৃত ভৌগলিক এলাকায় ৭ কোটি মানুষের জন্য আবাসিক ভূমি হিসেবে স্বাধীন ও সার্বভৌম এ'রাষ্ট্রের নাম "বাঙলাদেশ"। স্বাধীন ও সার্বভৌম "বাঙলাদেশ" গঠনের মাধ্যমে নিম্নলিখিত তিনটি লক্ষ্য অর্জন করতে হবে।
(১) স্বাধীন ও সার্বভৌম "বাঙলাদেশ" গঠন করে পৃথিবীর বুকে একটি বলিষ্ঠ বাঙালি জাতি সৃষ্টি ও বাঙালির ভাষা, সাহিত্য, কৃষ্টি ও সংস্কৃতির পূর্ণ বিকাশের ব্যবস্থা করতে হবে।
(২) স্বাধীন ও সার্বভৌম "বাঙলাদেশ" গঠন করে অঞ্চলে অঞ্চলে ব্যক্তিতে ব্যক্তিতে বৈষম্য নিরসনকল্পে সমাজতান্ত্রিক অর্থনীতি চালু করে কৃষক, শ্রমিক রাজ কায়েম করতে হবে।
(৩) স্বাধীন ও সার্বভৌম "বাঙলাদেশ" গঠন করে ব্যক্তি, বাক ও সংবাদপত্রের স্বাধীনতাসহ নির্ভেজাল গণতন্ত্র কায়েম করতে হবে।
বাংলার স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলন পরিচালনার জন্য নিম্নলিখিত কর্মপন্থা গ্রহণ করতে হবে :
(ক) বাঙলাদেশের প্রতিটি গ্রাম, মহল্লা, থানা, মহকুমা, শহর, জেলায় 'স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রাম কমিটি গঠন করতে হবে।
(খ) সকল শ্রেণীর জনসাধারণের সহযোগিতা কামনা ও তাদের ঐক্যবদ্ধ করতে হবে।
(গ) শ্রমিক এলাকায় শ্রমিক ও গ্রামাঞ্চলে কৃষকদের সুসংগঠিত করে গ্রামে গ্রামে, এলাকায় এলাকায় 'মুক্তিবাহিনী' গঠন করতে হবে।
(ঘ) হিন্দু-মুসলমান ও বাঙালি-অবাঙালি সাম্প্রদায়িক মনোভাব পরিহার করতে হবে এবং সম্প্রীতি বজায় রাখতে হবে।
(ঙ) স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামকে সুশৃংখলার সাথে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাবার জন্য পারস্পরিক যোগাযোগ রক্ষা করতে হবে এবং লুঠতরাজসহ সকল প্রকার সমাজবিরোধী ও হিংসাত্মক কার্যকলাপ বন্ধ করতে হবে।
স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনের ধারা নিম্নরূপ হবে:
(অ) বর্তমান সরকারকে বিদেশী উপনিবেশবাদী শোষক সরকার গণ্য করে বিদেশী সরকারের ঘোষিত সকল আইনকে বেআইনী বিবেচনা করতে হবে।
(আ) তথাকথিত পাকিস্তানের স্বার্থের তল্পীবাহী পশ্চিমা অবাঙালি মিলিটারীকে বিদেশী ও হামলাকারী শত্রু সৈন্য হিসেবে গণ্য করতে হবে এবং এ হামলাকারী শত্রুসৈন্যকে খতম করতে হবে।
(ই) বর্তমান বিদেশী উপনিবেশবাদী শোষক সরকারকে সকল প্রকার ট্যাক্স-খাজনা দেয়া বন্ধ করতে হবে।
(ঈ) স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনকারীদের উপর আক্রমণরত যে কোন শক্তিকে প্রতিরোধ, প্রতিহত, পাল্টা আক্রমণ ও খতম করার জন্য সকল প্রকার সশস্ত্র প্রস্তুতি নিতে হবে।
(উ) বৈজ্ঞানিক ও গণমুখী দৃষ্টিভঙ্গী নিয়ে সকল প্রকার সংগঠন গড়ে তুলতে হবে।
(ঊ) স্বাধীন সার্বভৌম বাঙলাদেশের জাতীয় সংগীত হিসেবে 'আমার সোনার বাঙলা আমি তোমায় ভালবাসি......' গানটি ব্যবহৃত হবে।
(ঋ) শোষক রাষ্ট্র পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানী দ্রব্য বর্জন করতে হবে এবং সর্বাত্মক অসহযোগ আন্দোলন গড়ে তুলতে হবে।
(এ) উপনিবেশবাদী পাকিস্তানী পতাকা পুড়িয়ে বাঙলাদেশের জাতীয় পতাকা ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
(ঐ) স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে রত বীর সেনানীদের সর্বপ্রকার সাহায্য ও সহযোগিতা প্রদান করে বাঙলার স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে ঝাপিয়ে পড়ুন।
বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান স্বাধীন ও সার্বভৌম বাংলাদেশের সর্বাধিনায়ক :
স্বাধীন ও সার্বভৌম বাঙলাদেশ গঠন আন্দোলনের এ পর্যায়ে নিম্নলিখিত জয়ধ্বনি ব্যবহৃত হবে--
* স্বাধীন সার্বভৌম বাংলাদেশ-- দীর্ঘজীবী হউক।
* স্বাধীন কর স্বাধীন কর-- বাংলাদেশ স্বাধীন কর।
* স্বাধীন বাংলার মহান নেতা-- বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব।
* গ্রামে গ্রামে দূর্গ গড়-- মুক্তিবাহিনী গঠন কর।
* বীর বাংগালী অস্ত্র ধর-- বাংলাদেশ স্বাধীন কর
* মুক্তি যদি পেতে চাও-- বাংগালীরা এক হও।

WITHDRAW FORCES AND TRANSFER POWER
[Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's speech in a public meeting at Dacca on March 3, 1971]
DACCA, March 3: Awami League Chief Sheikh Mujibur Rahman today urged the authorities to withdraw the forces from the city and hand over the power to the elected representatives of the people.
The authorities must realize that the people wanted self-rule and if they were resisted by force they would not hesitate to sacrifice their life, the Awami League Chief said while addressing a massive public meeting at Paltan Maidan here this afternoon.
He also issued directives to the people of Bangla Desh not to pay any taxes until and unless power was transferred to the people's representatives.
The massive public meeting was organized by the Students' League as a part of the province-wide hartal call given by the Chief of the Awami League.
"By obstructing the constitutional method the authorities have virtually compelled the people to shed their innocent blood for realizing their legal rights. This is absolutely intolerable. I appeal to the authorities concerned to immediately stop this wrong course by withdrawing Martial Law and transferring power to the elected representatives."
The massive public meeting was presided over by the Students' League Chief, Mr. Nure Alam Siddiqi. The meeting was also addressed, among others, by the General Secretary of Jatiya Sramik League Mr. Abdul Mannan, the General Secretary of the Students League, Mr. Shahjahan Siraj, and the General Secretary of the Dacca University Central Students Union (DUCSU) Mr. Abdul Quddus Makhan.
In an emotion choked voice, the Sheikh in his 30-minute speech, called upon the people to continue their struggle in a peaceful and organized manner.
He urged the people to be alert against agent-provocators and to maintain complete peace and discipline; otherwise the purpose of the movement would be spoiled.
He called upon the people from all walks of life to rise to the occasion and protect the life and property of everyone living in this part of the country, whether Hindu or Muslim, Bengali or non-Bengali.
Reminding the authorities that he as well as the people of Bangla Desh were ready to die for the realization of people's Iegitimate rights, he declared in clear-cut terms that the people were ready to face all the eventualities.
He said that he would never betray the cause of the people of Bangla Desh even facing death.
The Awami League Chief said that the authorities had taken action against those who had been asking for peaceful transfer of power.
Announcing his program of action up to March 7 next, he said that he would seek help and co-operation from all shades of opinion for the success of the movement.
He said that the hartal would be observed throughout Bangla Desh everyday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. After the hartal the vehicles should be allowed to move. He suggested and urged the people to pay a bit more to the rickshaw pullers to cover their day's earnings.
He will address a mass rally at the Race Course Maidan at 2 pm, on Sunday. He said that hartal was to be observed in all organizations, including Government offices, secretariat, High Court and other courts, semi-Government and autonomous corporations, PIA, Railway and other communication services, transports, all mills, factories, industrial and commercial establishments and markets.
He said that the forces were being maintained for protecting the country, and they could not be used against the common masses. Sheikh Sahib urged the authorities to pull back the forces to their barracks without further delay.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said that he had no language to condemn the incidents that took place in the city last night.
Sheikh Sahib made it clear that the present situation in the country was not the creation of his or any other people of Bangla Desh, but of the conspirators who had been trying to sabotage the peaceful transfer of power to the elected representatives of the people. The majority party had been even ignored while taking important national decisions, he said.
Sheikh Sahib advised each and every person of Bangla Desh to observe the hartal according to schedule in a peaceful and disciplined manner.
He, however, said that exemptions were to be extended only to ambulances, Press cars, hospitals, medicine shops, water and electricity supply.
Sheikh Sahib said that the speech at Paltan Maidan today might be his "last speech " and advised the people to continue their struggle in full swing even if he was absent. He said that there were a chain of leaders, among his companions who would be able to continue the struggle without any trouble.
The Sheikh who was earlier scheduled to lead a huge procession after the meeting, announced that the procession would not be led. Instead he led a prayer for the salvation of the departed souls of the martyrs who had, he maintained, died in the struggle for democracy.
Other speakers at the meeting called upon the people to maintain peace and harmony among the people, and desist from looting and other anti-social activities.
They declared in unequivocal terms that the people of Bangla Desh could not be suppressed anymore and they must achieve their goal at any cost.
The meeting in a resolution condemned the firings in different parts of the city during the last two days and prayed for the salvation of the departed souls. It expressed its, deep sympathy with the members of the bereaved families.
In another resolution, the meeting called upon the people from all walks of life to take active part in the movement for the realization of the people's rights under the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The meeting took a fresh vow for the establishment of a society in Bangla Desh. Where there would be no exploitation and people would live in peace.
Sheikh Mujib gave call for “peaceful satyagraha" movement for the realization of the rights of the people of Bangla Desh and appealed to the people to maintain peace for the success of the struggle.
Sheikh Mujib also appealed to the people to guard against looting and arson and to maintain peace at all costs. Any attempt to disrupt peaceful life must be resisted, because without strict discipline no mass movement could attain any success
Sheikh Mujib appealed for communal peace and added the Biharis non-Muslims "are our sacred trust".
He referred to the sacrifice of lives by Bengalis during the last 23 years and during yesterday's observance of hartal in the City.
He said "I do not know how many people died yesterday," adding that he himself heard the firing of machine-gun. He also led the prayer at the meeting for those who died. The dead bodies of a few persons, who died yesterday, were also brought to the public meeting.
Sheikh Mujib said he wanted to spell out the future course of action, and added if the attitude of the Government remained unchanged till March 7 he would give out his mind at the race course, where he is scheduled to address a public meeting. He said if he failed to turn up for any unforeseen reasons, there would be others to announce the future course of action.
He said the maintenance of discipline was the prerequisite for the success of any mass movement. Without discipline no movement could achieve any tangible results "no matter how many lives we sacrifice." He particularly reminded the volunteers of their responsibilities in this connection.
Sheikh Mujib said "we are not responsible for the present state of affairs". He said they as the majority party in the country were in favor of the National Assembly session on February 15, but Mr. Z. A. Bhutto wanted it to be deferred to the first week of March, and when it was summoned to meet today he (Bhutto) oppose it again.
The Awami League Chief regretted the stand taken by the People's Party chief on the session of the National Assembly, which was to begin today, and added although they " were ready to attend the session the use of arms was " directed at the Bengalis. He also referred to threats of PPP chief to set afire West Pakistan if the session was not postponed.
Sheikh Mujib, in an apparent reference to West Pakistan leaders, said " If you do not want to frame one constitution let us frame our own constitution and you frame your own. Then let us see if we can live together as brothers."
The Awami League Chief said the people of Bangla Desh freed him from jail at the cost of their lives and shed their blood in the last. "We are ready to make further sacrifices and give more blood." He added: "You cannot suppress the Bengalis by killing 70,000,000 Bengalis."
Sheikh Mujib said if he died his soul would be there to be happy to find the Bengalis free and that they have two square meals a day to survive.
Sheikh Mujib said he did not have any grudge against the poor people of West Pakistan. They had been trying to live together for the last 23 years but West Pakistan now wanted to secede because they knew it well by now that they could not perpetuate their exploitation on them.
The Awami League leader also called upon the Press not to obey any restriction on them. If any, and if they failed to resist it they should refuse to attend their offices. He told the Press that ``it is a national struggle", and everyone's participation was essential.

MUJIB REJECTS INVITATION
DACCA, March 3: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, President of the Awami League, rejected tonight the invitation of President Yahya Khan to attend the proposed meeting of the leaders of all the parliamentary groups in the National Assembly on March 10 in Dacca to solve the constitutional tangle.
Following is the full text of the statement.
"The radio announcement of the proposed invitation to the political leaders to sit with the President of Pakistan in conference in Dacca on March 10, coming as it does in the wake of widespread killing of the unarmed civilian population in Dacca, Chittagong and other places in Bangla Desh, while the blood of the martyrs on the streets is hardly dry, while some of the dead are still lying unburied and hundreds are fighting death in hospital comes as a cruel joke. This is more so since we are being called upon to sit with certain elements whose devious machinations are responsible for the death of innocent and unarmed peasants, workers and students.
"With the military build-up continuing with harsh language of weapons still ringing in our ears the invitation to such a conference is in effect being made at gun point.
"Under these circumstances, the question of accepting such invitations does not arise. I, therefore, reject such an invitation."

এদিন টানা দ্বিতীয় দিনের মতো কারফিউ ভেঙ্গে রাস্তায় নামে জঙ্গী জনতা। সুবাদেই চলে গুলি। শুরুতেই উল্লিখিত ফারুক ছাড়াও ঢাকায় এদিন আরো মারা যান হানিফ, আবদুল হক, হুমায়ুন ও আবদুর রশীদ। এছাড়া নিহত আরো ১১ জনের লাশের পরিচয় পাওয়া যায়নি। গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে ৭০ জন আহত অবস্থায় ঢাকা মেডিকেলে ভর্তি হন। সন্ধ্যায় বঙ্গবন্ধু তাদের দেখতে যান, সঙ্গী ছিলেন তাজউদ্দিন আহমেদ, ক্যাপ্টেন মনসুর আলী, ড. কামাল হোসেন, ব্যারিস্টার আমির হোসেন ও গাজী গোলাম মোস্তফা।
ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ১২৮ জন শিক্ষক এক যৌথ বিবৃতিতে দেশকে অরাজকতার দিকে ঠেলে দেওয়ার ভয়ংকর ষড়যন্ত্রের বিরুদ্ধে সজাগ থাকতে দেশবাসীর প্রতি আহবান জানান। এদিন শহীদ মিনারে অধ্যাপক মোজাফফর আহমদের নেতৃত্বে এক সমাবেশ আয়োজন করেন তারা। করাচিতে আয়োজিত এক নাগরিক সমাবেশে শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের হাতে প্রধানমন্ত্রীত্ব তুলে দেওয়ার আহবান জানানো হয়। এদিন পূর্ব পাকিস্তান জামাতে ইসলামীর আমির গোলাম আযম এক বিবৃতিতে অচলাবস্ধা নিরসনের জন্য নির্বাচিত গনপ্রতিনিধিদের হাতে ক্ষমতা হস্তান্তরের আহবান জানায়।
